A history of the Athenians or the Romans, to be sure – but where does any pagan writer attempt a history of the species? In contrast, Christians have always viewed history as moral drama, a single continuous narrative of sin and redemption in which the salvation of humankind is implicated. In any Christian view, it may not be given us to divine the ways of providence; but it cannot be doubted that history unfolds under its guidance.

In contrast, among pagans the belief that human nature is invariant went along with the belief that they would always worship different gods and live in different ways. There were better and worse ways for humans to live; but none that was best for all. In this pagan view, the constancy of human nature does not imply uniformity in its best manifestations. At the same time it means that there will always be many ways of living well. A similar view of things may be found in early modern thinkers who genuinely rejected Christianity, or who never took it seriously.
