Part of this Rivers estate included a private Rivers Waterworks in Crescent Fields. This was supplied from a spring on Beacon hill, Bath (Bartrum 1878) and it was this water supply and distribution network which Smith was now called in to try and improve. He was busy with this throughout 1812, but again details are sparse. Other examples of Smith's work as a waterseeking geologist include the work he did in seeking a supply of water for Swindon in 1816.
